The Excavator is a shovel that can be used to dig dirt tiles to obtain Clay, Soil Samples, Reagents, Fertile Dirt, and Organics. This has a chance when not in a town or guarded area to spawn a Golgothan creature. You can obtain this shovel by completing The Archaeologist quest.
